The first jeepney was made from discarded jeeps when the US departed the Philippines after WW2. Today the typical jeepney has become a work of art. They are brightly painted and decorated and personnalized by each owner. They carry people from one town to the next for a few pesos. For longer travels, people would use a bus or train. For traveling short distances or within a town, the preferred mode of travel is the trike.
